Melbourne's new bus contracts
Overview
The Victorian Transport Plan 2008 aims for improved public transport that gives Melburnians a practical alternative to car-based travel. Bus services are integral to achieving this plan.
In May 2006 the government committed $1.4 billion over 10 years to develop local and cross-town bus services. The plan included new contracts to improve the value derived from the growing investment in bus services. In negotiating the 29 new metro bus contracts the Department of Transport was required to improve the quality and effectiveness of bus services, to improve value for money and to maintain a constructive relationship with the bus industry.
The audit objective was to assess the effectiveness of the new metropolitan bus contracts.
